If you are a migrant worker in Malaysia, there may be days when your boss asks you to work longer hours than normal. Normal hours are 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week. All workers, except domestic workers, are entitled to a higher rate of pay for any extra hours over this number.

How to calculate your extra pay:

Within the Calculators tab, there is a tool you can select called the Overtime Pay Calculator. This is also available on the SaverAsia App through the Calculators button.

  1. Enter the amount of money you earn and the frequency of this payment. It could be daily, weekly or monthly. If you are unsure, check with your employer. The calculator will calculate your hourly rate.
  2. Then, think about the number of hours you worked overtime. If a normal day is 8 hours, calculate how many extra hours you worked over this number. For example, you could have worked normal hours from Monday to Friday but then 12 hours on a Saturday. This is 4 hours over the normal expected hours. Therefore, you have worked 4 hours overtime.
  3. Select ‘Next.’ The calculator will summarise your basic wage and the extra pay you should receive for the overtime hours. It is calculated using the hours you worked multiplied by 1.5 your basic wage. The calculator will calculate your total income for the period of time you worked.

There is a detailed video here on our website if you need more help. If you have any questions or issues with your pay, check with your employer.
